Using a Spectrophotometer

Not too many homebrewers think of adding a spectrophotometer to their home lab equipment due to cost and how frequently it would be used. But BYO’s Technical Editor Ashton Lewis says you can now buy used spectrophotometers online very inexpensively and have the fun of accurately measuring your beer’s color. The device uses a specific light wavelength and a glass cuvette to determine the reading. Learn more about why and how you might want to add a spectrophotometer as a new brewing tool in your quiver.
